It’s always an unfortunate situation when service let’s down an otherwise perfectly fine eating establishment. We’ve recently encountered a case where we were confronted with this situation. While the food at Newman Street Tavern was good and at times delicious the service was disappointing.
Newman Street Tavern is a restaurant focusing primarily on British seafood-based dishes. The restaurant recently opened its doors to the public in an area that is saturated with some good dining options (think Roka, Salt Yard, Lima and Pied a Terre just to name a few) and has generally received good reviews.
When we visited Newman Street Tavern we tried the following dishes:
- Megrim sole (8/10)
- Scratchings (6.5/10)
- Crab salad (8/10)
- Lobster roll (7/10)
- Cuttlefish sashimi, salted gooseberries (7/10)
- Fish & chips (7.5/10)
While on the whole the food tasted good we were faced with a few unpleasant surprises when it came to the service. We waited for over 15mins before our orders were taken, had to ask repeatedly for additional condiments to our chips and had to ask if the air-conditioning could be turned down as our spot had turned into something akin to an ice cellar. After the disappointing service we decided to skip desserts and enjoy our coffee and desserts somewhere else.
The total bill at Newman Street Tavern came £70 (including 2 glasses of wine and service charge).
