The thought of Hawksmoor food elicits an almost instinctive and automatic response of elaborate salivation and craving that is fueled by some orgasmic past culinary experiences.
By now Hawksmoor‘s steaks are legendary and lately they’ve gained some notoriety for their burgers as well. With the passing of time, ever changing London food fads and stiff competition from the Goodman and Lobster & burger chain, Hawksmoor has expanded it’s menu with burgers and seafood dishes.
Hawksmoor Guidhall doesn’t quite have the buzz that for instance Hawksmoor Sevendials or the Spitalfields branches have (as most of the clientele are city folks), but it does have a similar dark wooden interior that has become synonymous with the Hawksmoor brand. We visited the restaurant early in the day (5pm) and the staff was still getting ready for the evening shift. It was good to see the jovial and friendly atmosphere of the staff who genuinely seemed to enjoy their camaraderie and work.
During our latest visit to Hawksmoor Guildhall we tried the following dishes:
- Bone marrow and onions (9/10)
- Rib-eye steak (7.5/10)
- Chicory, walnut, pear and Colston Bassett salad (8/10)
- Hawksmoor hamburger with blue cheese (8.5/10)
- Tamworth belly ribs (8/10)
- Lobster roll (6.5/10)
- Beef dripping fries (8.5/10)
- Triple cooked chips (8/10)
- Peanut butter shortbread (8/10)
As always the food at Hawksmoor was good. As I’ve gotten to know the chain better, I actually find that I prefer their non-steak dishes and generally speaking I think their non-steak dishes are better than Goodman’s. However, it has to be said that their lobster roll is vastly inferior to Burger & Lobster’s lobster roll (the latter is moist, lemony, light & fresh whereas the former is too oily and heavy) .
The total bill at Hawksmoor Guildhall came to £133 (including service charge, a glass of wine and a bottle of water).
